It’s hard to believe, but in only three short months, it will be time for Georgia’s premier sport and social event – the Georgia Steeplechase! Like many equestrian enthusiasts in the Peach State, all of us here at Horse Hound and Hunt are looking forward to the Georgia Steeplechase held annually the first Saturday in April at beautiful Kingston Downs. However, before the big day arrives, it’s time to consider what to wear. With its Hat and Best Dressed Gentleman contests, Georgia Steeplechase is the perfect opportunity to show off your derby style. Whether you’re looking to buy a special steeplechase outfit or work with what’s in your closet, Horse Hound and Hunt has some great suggestions for putting together a fabulous spring look!
Some things are classic aspects of steeplechase style. Spring colors and seersucker suits are always fantastic choices for the perfect derby look. This year, prints will be big for Georgia Steeplechase men’s fashion. And it won’t only be the Peach State! According to the Kentucky Derby web page, it will be a trend at the nation’s biggest thoroughbred race as well. Don’t be afraid to mix and match prints in your shirt and tie. Try pairing a subtle print, such as a shirt checkered in hues of the same color, with something bolder, such as a vibrant patterned tie.
This is also a great option if you are looking to wear a spring suit you already own. Dress up a light gray or tan suit with a colorful button-down shirt and tie and don’t forget to add a colorful pocket square for a little bit of pizzazz! You’ll achieve a fun yet balanced spring steeplechase look!
Of course, Georgia Steeplechase means hats! Homburg, Fedoras and Panama style hats are always popular choices for the Georgia Steeplechase. Dress up a straw or light-colored hat with colorful hat pins, hat bands, and or even a feather. Have fun with your hat, and find accessories that reflect your personality or are conversation starters. Of course, for those who want to have even more fun– and maybe a few laughs– your hat can be as wild or whimsical as you like!
As with the gentlemen, spring colors are always appropriate in ladies’ Georgia Steeplechase fashion and the color green looks to be popular this
spring. Mid-length skirts will be on trend, as will both flat and low wedge shoes. If you want to wear a skirt or dress that falls below the knees, be sure to add a little extra height to your wedges, but avoid wedges with heavy rope designs. Unlike men, many women will not be wearing bold patterns to Steeplechase this year. The reason is simple: you don’t want the pattern of your dress to compete with your fabulous hat!
Your hat is the crowning glory of your Georgia Steeplechase style! Fascinators are all the rage as are large brim tea party/wedding hats and natural straw hats with bright accessories are always a classic choice. Colorfully dyed straw or organza hats will also be big this year and the wider the brim, the better! For the hat contest, don’t forget to decorate your hat with vibrant bands, ribbons, flowers, pins, and feathers for the best chance to win. As with men’s hats, choose hat accessories that say something about you, or that are sure to be noticed and talked about! Don’t be afraid to be whimsical and flamboyant… Your Georgia Steeplechase hat can be as fun and fabulous as you like!
Above all else, your Georgia Steeplechase style should be uniquely your own! Have fun creating the perfect spring look for race day. Do you already have your outfit for the 2019 Georgia Steeplechase?
